NEEC: Oil and gas sector poses serious empowerment challenges

BY CAROLYNE MADOSHI

6th January 2014

The National Economic Empowerment Council (NEEC) has acknowledged that the emergence of oil and gas sector has challenged the council to come up with a number of empowering programmes that will feature up in the coming financial year.

In an exclusive interview with The Guardian at the weekend NEEC Executive Secretary Dr Anaclet Kachuriza said similar programmes on oil and gas industry were yet to start in coal mining, but added that the council is will use the knowledge in the former to aid the latter, for the benefit of the society.

Dr Kachuriza said, “this coming financial year our emphasis will focus on oil and gas in order to shape up on the local content as the public needs prior knowledge about the industry in the course of utilising the resources”.

Commenting on the importance of the sector, he said, the promotion of oil and gas industry will facilitate the growth of agriculture.

In the course, agriculture will be transformed and lives of the people will also be changed for the better in the country. Over 70 percent of the population depends on agriculture as the basic economic activity.

The agricultural sector will not be left behind during the coming fiscal year, he added, noting that some crops will be promoted and irrigation schemes will be encouraged in order to lift ‘Kilimo Kwanza’ programmes so that the contribution of agriculture to the GDP is also jacked up.

He said implementation of the traceability programme in beekeeping has been progressive as the barcode system now is applied in beehives, and bee products have swiftly captured international markets.

He called upon the beekeepers to seek knowledge about traceability and transform from traditional beekeeping to a modern production structure in order to apply traceability system smoothly into the sector.

Meanwhile, the National Beekeeping Supplies Limited Director Christina Chilewa has said the traceability system has transformed the beekeeping industry since it has added value on its products.

“We have seen the importance of traceability since it has added value on our products and it has facilitated more people to invest in agriculture because the sector is undergoing transformation,” Chilewa explained.

According to her the adaptation of traceability system to beekeepers is going to be a gradual process because most people lack enough knowledge about it.
Chilewa urged Tanzanians to change their mindset on agriculture and invest in the sector especially beekeeping because it creates employment.

She expressed her gratitude towards the government by playing a big role in promoting agriculture sector particularly beekeeping through formation of policies and laws.

In addition she called upon the government to accommodate the private sector since it’s a catalyst in the economy development.
