Mugumu — TANZANIA is set to have the first medical ship that will be going around providing a wide range of medical services to patients within the Lake Zone regions.President Jakaya Kikwete is scheduled to launch the medical ship next month, according to the Deputy Minister for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Kebwe Stephen Kebwe."The president will on August 2 launch the first of its kind medical ship in Tanzania and Africa," Dr Kebwe said in an exclusive interview with the 'Daily News' here recently.The Christian Life World Mission Volunteers is setting up the medical ship at Kamanga ferry in Mwanza.Launching of the medical ship will see significant improvement of medical services in the lake zone regions, thanks to the President of the Christian Life Mission Volunteers, Dr Rev Paul Kim, for realising the importance of introducing the services in Tanzania.The medical ship will have a wide range of specialist doctors. "It will real help to improve treatment services and I will soon inspect the work before launching ceremony," the deputy minister said. Fishing communities residing in Island areas will be among the major beneficiaries.Dr Kebwe said the move will help to check the increased cases of sexual transmitted diseases including HIV/ AIDS and other diseases in the communities living around the world's second largest water body on the Tanzanian side."There are many diseases and even level of HIV Virus transmission is high in the islands. The medical ship will be helpful. It will be having full time specialist doctors," Dr Kebwe who served as Mara Regional Medical Officer (RMO) several years before joining politics, said.Mara is one of the target regions. Dr Kebwe was in Serengeti District in Mara Region where, among other things, he launched medical services offered by a team of 17 doctors from New York early this month.The coming of the US doctors saw several hundreds of patients flocking into the Nyerere District Designated Hospital (DDH) where they offered their services for three days.Their trip was coordinated by Dr Rev Paul Kim, President of Christian Life World Mission Volunteers after having held fruitful talks with Chairman of Serengeti District Council, Mr John Ng'oina.The health deputy minister hailed a wide range of medical services offered by the US specialist doctors and said he would like the programme to be sustained.
