IN SUMMARY
According to a statement, Statoil had already commissioned a study for the construction of the plant for processing natural gas into LNG form.
Dar es Salaam. Construction of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plant in Mtwara will take seven years from 2015, The Citizen on Saturday learnt yesterday.
According to a statement, Statoil had already commissioned a study for the construction of the plant for processing natural gas into LNG form.
Statoil operations manager Thomas Mannes says in a statement that the construction process was expected to be completed in 2022 creating employment opportunities to 10,000 Tanzanians.
“We estimate that it will take two years to complete technical works, another two years to conduct a geophysical survey and three years to construct transport infrastructure as well as installation of materials and machineries for producing LNG,” said Mr Mannes.
According to Statoil consultant Willy Olsen, religious leaders from Mtwara and Lindi regions have recently toured the Karsto LNG plant based in Norway to familiarize themselves on the working of such a big LNG plant in the world.
“At least 80 per cent of workers in the expected LNG plant will be technicians, engineers and other experts. Each worker will create between six and seven jobs. There will be a lot of other related businesses in Mtwara region,” he said.
For their part, religious leaders called upon Statoil to build capacity of Tanzanians so that they could participate in several business deals relating to oil and gas development.
The religious leaders were in Stavenger Norway recently for a short term training on oil and gas sponsored by the ministry of Energy and Minerals and the government of Norway.
Experts estimate that the construction of the LNG plant will cost between $30 billion (Sh51 trillion) and $40 billion (Sh68 trillion), which is almost the same as the current GDP value for Tanzania.
According to Statoil, the Kårstø processing plant north of Stavanger plays a key role in the transport and treatment of gas and condensate (light oil) from important areas on the Norwegian continental shelf.
First gas arrived at the plant on 25 June 1985, and dry gas began to be dispatched by pipeline to Emden in Germany on October 15, of the same year. The Statpipe trunkline system carries gas from the North Sea to Kårstø.
The Kårstø facility also receives gas from Åsgard and other fields in the Norwegian Sea through the Åsgard Transport trunk-line.
In operation since 1 October 2000, the Åsgard section of the plant processes this gas to meet sales specifications.
The new extraction train (NET1) project was completed on 1st October 2003, allowing Kårstø to receive and process rich gas from the Mikkel field in the Norwegian Sea through Åsgard Transport.
