Zanzibar — THE National Audit Office (NAO) has been commended for the good work it has been doing, Zanzibar President Dr Ali Mohammed Shein said on Thursday, as the Isles won praise from development partners.
"Keep up the good work, I am pleased to say diplomats visiting us recognise our efforts in maintaining good governance and proper use of natural resources," the president said.
Dr Shein was addressing public servants in Wete, North Pemba where he officiated the opening of a new building to house NAO offices.
He praised the Controller and Auditor General (CAG) for the achievements, calling on other government institutions to emulate them.
The president said maintaining good governance including financial discipline, accountability, and commitment promotes good relations between Zanzibar and development partners and "enables the country to get loans."
He said that proper use of public money has helped Zanzibar government record admirable achievements economically, "the government of national unity (GNU) started with 6.5 per cent GDP growth, but it has grown to 7.4 per cent by 2013/2014."
Dr Shein said that the collection of revenue has been improving, noting that 181bn/- was collected in 2010/2011 but it had increased to 330bn/- in 2013/2014 "The collection must be spent well on development projects.
Therefore CAG has a big role to make sure that the public money is spent for its intended purpose," he said. The president promised to empower the CAG's office including providing modern working equipment for efficiency.
