Said bin Hamdoun al- Harthy, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications for Ports and Maritime Affairs, said that the pilot project is a good step by OBC to use the power transmission cables of the electricity companies rather digging and laying new cables. He said the idea will contribute to reduce the time, effort and cost.
Eng Said bin Abdullah al-Mantheri, CEO, OBC, said, that the experiment was successful in coordination with OETC and TRA to use the communications infrastructure of the electricity companies, represented by the fiber optic cables of the high voltage towers, adding that mobile phone station in the Wilayat of Bausher ( Hamam Al Sunub) was chosen, which lies about 40m from the electricity transmission tower and the selection of a meeting point, about 400m from the line of electricity transmission and Omantel fiber optic network.
He said that OBC coordinated with the concerned authorities to draw an agreed on path, as well as construction works and extending fiber optic cables between electricity transmission station, mobile phone station and Omantel network at a distance of about 440 meters from both sides at a cost equivalent to RO 9000, pointing out that the station provides a 40 Mbps internet connection, compared to 3 Mbps.
Talal bin Said al- Maamary, CEO of Omantel, said that the pilot project is a good experience and comes within the framework of OBC’s efforts to find channels for integration in infrastructure among a group of participating institutions in this project, noting that this integration is needed because there is a significant investment and efforts are being made in infrastructure.
Qais bin Saud al- Zakawani, Executive Director of Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) explained that ERA took the initiative and asked the company operating in the electricity sector to provide all avenues of cooperation with OBC to the success of this pilot project. ONA
