UDSM announces new deputy vice chancellors

BY SYLIVESTER DOMASA

University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) Governing Council over the weekend announced three new Deputy Vice Chancellors to fill the positions of academic, administration and research and knowledge exchange positions.

The three are, Prof Florens Luoga, Prof David Mfinanga and Prof Cuthert Kimambo who took charge of office with immediate effect.

Prof Luoga will be assuming the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor responsible for academics, the position left by retiring Prof Makenya Maboko.

Prof Mfinanga will take over the position of Deputy Vice Chancellor for administration, a position previously held by Prof Yunus Mgaya who is now appointed the new Executive Secretary for the Tanzania Commission of Universities (TCU).

Prof Kimambo was named new Deputy Vice Chancellor responsible for research and knowledge exchange, the position that was previously held by Prof Luoga.

Prof Luoga is a renowned expert and specialist on taxation law and international trade law and is also a respected consultant on legal negotiations.

Prof Mfinanga is widely recognised as a prolific African researcher in transport engineering and is a co-leader of the African Centre of Excellence on Public Transport and Non-motorised Transport (ACET) a joint effort by the UDSM, Nairobi and Cape-Town.

Prof Kimambo is renowned for his contribution in advancement of knowledge and professional practices in engineering and technology particularly in the fields of energy, technology and innovation.

The new appointment was announced at the university’s Nkurumah hall during a joint council and senate ceremony for the investiture and validation of Deputy Vice Chancellors.

Announcing the appointment, Peter Ngumbulu, UDSM Council Chairman noted that the move follows a deliberation reached by the Governing Council and the Acting University Council at its 225th special meeting held in November this year.

Addressing the ceremony, Justice (retired) Joseph Warioba said the outgoing Deputy Vice Chancellors were engines for the development of the university’s policy and operation development.

“This team was a big help to the Governing Council especially whenever there was crisis at the university, they are the ones who had to make bold decisions for the benefit of the institution,” said the Former Constitutional Review Commission chairman who is also a member of the university’s  Governing Council.
