Zanzibar — ZANZIBAR First Vice-President Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad has said that everyone has the responsibility to take all necessary steps to ensure the protection of Human rights.
Mr Hamad made the call when he received a procession of activists mounted to mark International Human Rights Day held in Zanzibar municipality.
The vice-president asked people at all levels to be bold in protecting and respecting human rights.
"It is a fact that some members of the defence and security organs are being blamed for violation of human rights, but it is also irrefutable that members of the public also violate human rights," said Mr Hamad.
He argued that despite an ongoing global campaign against violation of human rights, incidents of rights abuse, particularly abuse of children, torture, corruption, brutality and attack on albinos and elderly people, were still rampant.
The move to mark Human Rights Day in the islands was initiated by the Zanzibar Legal Services Centre (ZLSC) in collaboration with other activists.
Mr Hamad challenged the institutions to increase public awareness so that people knew their rights and how to defend them.
Ms Fatma Said from the Tanzania Women's Media Association (TAMWA) was joined by other activists to blame the judiciary, police, local leaders, and land department for leading in violation of human rights.
She said people with disability, people living with HIV, and drug users were more affected by violations of Human Rights in Zanzibar.
ZLSC chairperson, Prof Chris Peter Maina, said at the well-attended function that it was everybody's concern, regardless of position, to see that human rights were respected and protected at all time.
The International Human Rights Day is marked worldwide on December 10, and this year's theme was "Celebrating 20 years of changing lives through human rights."
