The Education and Vocational Training Deputy Minister, Anna Kilango said the cost to built a single centre is between 3bn/- and 4bn/-.
“We cannot afford to construct the centres across the country,” she said when responding to a supplementary question by Mbozi legislator, David Silinde (Chadema). The lawmaker had asked for government clarifications on plans to construct a similar vocational centre in Momba.
“We want private firms and individuals to complement government initiatives to construct the centers in various districts,” said Kilango.
Ukerewe MP Salvatory Machemli (Chadema) wanted to know when the government would execute its plan for building a vocational training centre in Ukerewe as it had earlier promised. The MP conceded that during the 17th parliamentary meeting the government vowed to build the centre in Ukerewe partly to help youth gain self skills and reduce unemployment.
The deputy minister said the government was working on the project, however the budget constrains had brought the project to a standstill.
Currently, she said the government had announced tender seeking a consultant who would then advise on the design for the centre.
“All applicants for the consultant postion will be screened come July 2015,”she said.
She outlined concerns that the district council was however required to map the required area for the construction of the vocational training facility.
She admitted that the district had initially allocated 7.95ha but the area must be surveyed and obtain land title for the construction to start.
On October 2013, President Jakaya Kikwete directed the Vocational Education Training Authority (VETA) to ensure it built at least one centre in each district.
