TIGO supports cybercrime law

Tanzania says it supports government efforts to protect Tanzanians against cybercrimes by enacting the much debated Cyber Crime Act.

TIGO’s General Manager Mr Diego Gutierrez said that his company supported the government efforts in enacting the Cyber Crime Law that was passed in the Parliament and assented to by President Jakaya Kikwete.

“We have no problem with the Act and we think it was presented at the right time and are of the view that the communication industry has been given another opportunity to decide on what to communicate and how to communicate it,” he said at a meeting with Lake Zone media representatives and editors.

He said his the mobile phone operator was committed to abide by laws and regulations governing the communication industry in the country.

The legislation was important to the country as well as all communication stakeholders as it provided protection to Tanzanians against cybercrimes, he said.
On April 1 this year, Parliament passed a cyber crime bill that addresses among others child pornography, cyber bullying and online impersonation.

Others include electronic production of racist and xenophobic content, unsolicited messages, illegal interception of communications, and publication of false information.

On the operations in the Lake Zone, Mr Gutierrez said his company plans to spend 6.3 million US Dollars (about 10bn/- in expansion and improvement of its network this year.

He said the envisaged plans include the construction of 63 additional sites including seven LTE sites that will make sure residents in villages of the Zonal regions are connected to the company’s services.

“This investment means we are prepared to give more people new social and economic opportunities, integrating them to the global economy through internet access and enabling them to embrace a digital lifestyle,” he said.

For the first time 4 G which will be rolled out in Mwanza from August this year will enable people to communicate through making Skype calls which one of the advanced communication methodologies in the world.

Meanwhile, Tigo on Tuesday handed over 25 computers with internet connection worth over 30m/- to the Sekou Toure Hospital to facilitate for medical communications and speedy delivery of services.

The donation jointly contributed by the company and another communication company Huawei was received by the Nyamagana District Commissioner Mr Baraka Konisaga who thanked the companies for the technological support.

Huawei Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mr Zhang Yongquan said during the handover event that access to hospital services was vital for human development.

Mr Konisaga appealed to the other partners in the private sector to support government initiatives in strengthening the health sector in the country.



“In wish to thank Tigo and Huawei for their support towards health improvement at our Regional referral hospital Sekou Toure and appeal to other business enterprises to come forward and join these efforts,” he said.
