Committee endorses Shein 2nd term bid

MEMBERS of the special committee of the CCM National Executive Committee (NEC) in Zanzibar on Sunday unanimously approved President Ali Mohammed Shein’s application to contest in the October general election as the party’s Isles flag bearer.

“The special committee went through Dr Shein’s presidential nomination forms, the only applicant and backed him,” a press communique from the meeting chaired by the Union Vice-President, Dr Mohammed Gharib Bilal, said.

The CCM special committee is formed by members of the NEC from Zanzibar who according to the party procedure, have to discuss the applicants for Isles’ top position, MPs, and House of Representatives before forwarding to ZEC, and Central Committee.

Dr Shein was the only applicant from Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) to apply, as traditionally members of the party allow the incumbent president to finish his/her second term in office.

“Dr Shein thanked members of the special committee for supporting his bid,” the statement said, adding that he remains optimistic that higher organs will approve his name as the party flag bearer in the next elections for Zanzibar.

Already, the main rival of Dr Shein is Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad who has already been endorsed by the Civic United Front (CUF) to contest in the October election.

Other parties like AFP, TADEA, ADC, and Jahazi-Asilia are in preparation to contest for Zanzibar presidency.
