Tanzanians urged to donate to research initiatives (2)

ZANZIBAR President Ali Mohammed Shein has urged the private sector to build a culture of donating for research initiatives in the country to boost development.

“Research helps to get out of the problems. It is high time the private sector and individuals supported research in the country,” Dr Shein said in his speech at the opening of the new offices of the Tanzania Commission of Science and Technology (COSTECH) in Zanzibar.

Dr Shein’s speech was read on his behalf at Maruhubi here by the Second Vice-President, Ambassador Seif Ali Iddi. He said COSTECH has indicated that it is possible to get out of poverty and speed up development.

He said COSTECH has been taking part seriously in the speeding development by supporting students to pursue higher education (Master’s and Doctorate) and that its function in the country is visible.

“The State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), Institute of Marine Science (IMS), Zanzibar Institute of Financial Administration (ZIFA), and Kizimbani Agricultural Research Centre are some of the higher learning institutions,” said Dr Shein.

He said COSTECH, the Planning Commission and Second Vice-President’s Office have workable plans for speedy development- oriented research.

Dr Shein said however that results of the research should be used for the benefit of the people at all levels. He said incorporating research outcomes in national priorities should be enhanced.

COSTECH Director Dr Hassan Mshinda said the opening of an office in the islands was part of implementing the promise to extend its services to Zanzibar.

“Developing seaweed, including support of carrier small boats for seaweed transportation, is among programmes for support from COSTECH,” Dr Shein said in his speech.

The construction of the new COSTECH offices in Zanzibar cost about 185m/-.
