The move was prompted by the former CCM cadre, Mr Edward Lowassa, to cross over to Chadema, said group leader of the defectors, Mr James Jackson.
The new members have decided to join CCM as the best way of getting their rights and good leaders from the ruling party in the coming general election.
“CUF members who have defected were disgusted by their party’s decision to field Mr Lowassa for the presidency,” he said. Mr Jackson cautioned: “If Ukawa wants to lose these elections, it should ignore what the people want… we are already disappointed by the parties’ decision.”
He claimed that Mr Lowassa had decided to join Chadema for his own benefit and not for the benefit of the nation at large.
The group said they were still convinced that the former prime minister was not fit to be among those expected to be flagbearers in the coming elections, even though Chadema had received him to join the Ukawa coalition because he was tainted with corruption.However, the allegations which have continued to be levelled against him have been denied by |Mr Lowassa. CCM Ideology and Publicity Secretary in Kinondoni District, Mr Mwinyimkuu Sangarai, said her party had received 20 CUF and Chadema cards from youth and some women from Ubungo Msewe, adding that they would soon undergo an orientation programme on CCM operations and policies.
“We believe that more members will join CCM as the most powerful party in the country in order to get their rights and elect good leaders in the coming elections,” he said.
He advised all Tanzanians to be stable and active in order to defend and protect CCM, as a way of recording success for people’s welfare and for the benefit of the next generation.
“We can assure you that CCM still stands strong to defend all party members in the country in order to make the October elections successful,” he said.
Meanwhile, over 100,000 CCM members are expected to participate in the parliamentary and civic preferential polls in Kinondoni District in Dar es Salaam today.
Speaking to the ‘Daily News on Saturday,’ CCM Secretary in Kinondoni district, Mr Athuman Cheshe, said that the exercise was expected to start at around 8.00 am to 04.00 pm in 308 different branches.
“CCM follows rules and regulations in conducting the polls to gauge aspirants who are strong. This is part of a mechanism to look for a capable leader who is sympathetic with the people,” said Mr Cheshe.
