Long-serving Labour and Employment deputy minister Dr Milton Makongoro Mahanga, who lost the race on Saturday, meanwhile yesterday called a press conference to declare that he was ditching the ruling party to join the opposition Chama cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (Chadema).
Mahanga lost Dar es Salaam’s Segerea constituency and, much like former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa only days earlier, accused CCM of not abiding by democratic principles. He also complained of never having risen beyond the rank of deputy minister despite serving in that capacity for a whole decade.
“From today I am no longer a CCM member and intend to join Chadema if the party’s leadership accepts me,” he declared, adding: “I am convinced that other leaders and members from CCM who hate this kind of hooliganism of people abusing voters’ choice will join me and make the difficult decision of quitting CCM and joining other parties.”Prominent CCM leaders who have lost their seats but have remained loyal to the party include Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation deputy minister Mahadhi Juma Maalim and his Home Affairs counterpart, Pereira Silima.
Others are former cabinet ministers Naziri Karamagi and Juma Kapuya along with former two-term Tunduru South legislator Mtutura Mtutura.
However, according to poll reports announced yesterday, most departing MPs maintained their posts while in other places newcomers clinched the empty seats ousting sitting legislators.
In Moshi-rural constituency, former Trade and Industry Minister Dr Cyril Chami was declared winner after having 5,610 total vote count ahead of his contender Ansi Mmasy (3,181). Now he faces Lucy Owenya, Chadema’s Special Seats MP who will this year be the party’s flag bearer in the October polls.
CCM’s Arumeru District Executive Director Danstan Mallya emerged victorious for Hai Constituency, an area otherwise dominated by opposition Chadema. He got 8,250 votes ahead of his contender Fuya Kimbita who scrapped 2,275 votes.

Two aspirants for Moshi-Urban also protested to results there after Dar es Salaam based tycoon Davis Mosha emerged victor. Buni Ramole and Patrick Boisafi were among 12 other competitors but only the two refused to accept the results.
The 12 include Priscus Tarimo, Edmund Rutaraka, Shaniel Ngindu, Innocent Siriwa, Amani Ngowi, Omari Mwariko, Michael Mwita, Daudi Mrindoko and Khalifa Kiwango.
Meanwhile, reports from Vunjo say six aspirants there are also crying foul play after Innocent Meleck was announced winner. The six are Masiga Amos, Veronika Shao, Eveline Msangi, Mchungaji Alphonce Temba, Joachim Kessy and Peter Msakcy who have all threatened to ‘take tough measures’ should the CCM Regional Secretary Emanuel Rutta and the National Secretary Abdurahman Kinana fail to take action.

Reports from Njombe show that the preliminary results in two constituencies out of six in the region have the sitting MPs leading the votes.
Announcing the results, CCM secretary for Njombe Hosea Mpagike said that Deo Filikunjombe is leading in Ludewa with 18290 votes followed by Zefania Chaula 770 and Capten Jacob Mpangara who got 205 votes.
He said in Njombe -West Greison Lwenge is leading by 11324 votes taking the lead ahead of 12 aspirants vying for the constituency.
