.....as Dr Magufuli partially loses speech in Mbeya
Campaigns coordinator Deogratias Munishi told reporters at the grounds yesterday that preparations were largely completed, with CHADEMA branches sending representatives from all over the country, and visitors expected from a number of friendly countries, along with most UKAWA leaders.
He specifically cited party stalwarts from Arusha, Morogoro and Coast Region as particularly expected, along with other regions.
He especially urged city dwellers to turn out in huge numbers to get the gist of the contender’s campaign message, what he intends to do in case he obtains the mandate to govern in the October 25 poll.He also expressed fears that the state-owned Tanzania Electric Supply Co. Ltd (TANESCO) might indulge in deliberate mischief to stage a power cut in various regions to cut short the message on television, but insisted that this will not do harm to UKAWA as they intend to visit all regions in the campaign.
He said the candidate will first visit Iringa region where he will hold four major rallies.
The following day candidate Lowassa will visit Mufindi, Kilolo, Kalenga and later in the evening address a major rally in Iringa municipality.
Running mate Duni Haji shall be in Mtwara, visiting Tandahimba, Mtwara Rural and later Mtwara Urban district where he would hold a large meeting in the evening.
Munishi, who is the party director for international cooperation, said the party was making arrangements to protect members of the public who will turn up for the Jangwani rally , saying it was principally the police who are tasked with protecting civilians and property in the area during the ceremony.
He said the police have information on today’s meeting in which case it is their duty to ensure that there is adequate security and assurance of harmony at the grounds.
CHADEMA information unit head, Tumaini Makene, said they expect to use air travel where necessary, in accordance with requirements laid out in the law.
This remark was seen as countering an earlier omnibus report of various meeting outlets and travel means that certain quarters in the government were trying to raise against the UKAWA candidate, while the CCM candidate faces no hurdles whatsoever.
“We shall use strategies that we have set out for ourselves to conduct the campaign by following laws and regulations on election conduct, as we have already programmed,” he directly affirmed.
Meanwhile, the Guardian reporter reports from Mbeya region that CCM Presidential candidate Dr John Magufuli attracted thousands of Rungwe and Kyela residents in Mbeya region yesterday but experienced a hard time to speak as his voice faltered, giving an opportunity to those accompanying him to extol the virtues of CCM candidates for Parliament.
Different from other meetings since he launched his campaign run on Tuesday August 24, where he has been addressing meetings to his satisfaction, exploring various spheres of his intended action to the gathered crowds, while yesterday he talked only briefly as his voice faltered.
Mbeya CCM regional chairman Godfrey Zambi sought to present the party’s contestants for Rungwe and Busokelo constituencies, and later Dr Magufuli took the stage to appeal for votes.
While on his way to Kyela, the candidate stopped at Kiwira to greet the local residents who has closed the road wishing that he makes an address in their direction. But when he tried to say ‘CCM oyee’ his voice failed, tried to do so again and each time he tried only a rasping voice could be heard.
He told residents that he was seeking for votes to be president so as to being about development, a task which is not the preserve of a political party and will be seen rapidly in the next year, for instance giving free education “because all thieves of public funds will have been contained.”
Addressing Kyela residents at the John Mwakangale ground, after his voice failed, he said “unfortunately my voice is not good. I know God will restore it in Jesus’ name,” and when he tried to speak again he only brought out the same rasping voice.
“I was itching to explain in detail what I wish to do but I am failing to speak. Opposition fellows have bewitched me, they should fail and be humbled in the name of Jesus………” he remarked, and apparently his voice improved and he said “you see the name of Jesus has started working.”
The difficulty continued when addressing Rungwe residents, compelling the regional party chairman to extol the party’s contenders for Parliament, including senior minister and member of the party’s
National Executive Committee, William Lukuvi. He was asked to take the podium but talked only briefly.
Zambi, addressing Kyela residents, said the party did not strike a lucky chance in picking its presidential candidate, castigating those who were saying that the party is in uncharted waters to take note that it is stronger than before.
Dr Magufuli, addressing the crowd, said he was asking for votes from people who might be adhering to different political parties because development was for all, that he knows the challenges that people face and was ready to tackle them.
He promised to extend tarmac road surface for Matema Beach road to Kyela which would cost about Sh56bn “and the contractor is ready to ensure that construction begins.”
Former regional commissioner John Mwakipesile said the candidate was a paragon of ethics, meekness, probity and not a money grabber and thus deserves to be fitted with the presidential gown.
