Lowassa woos women voters, pledges to boost their welfare

UNION presidential candidate on Coalition of Four Political Parties, UKAWA ticket, Mr Edward Lowassa, pledged to address problems facing women in the country if Tanzanians would endorse his bid for the Union presidency through a massive ‘yes’ vote in the forthcoming general election.

He told a special gathering of women in Dar es Salaam organised by Chadema women’s wing, BAWACHA, that one of his first acts should he be elected president would be to hold a special women’s meeting at Ngurdoto Lodge in Arusha to discuss their welfare.

His speech was preceded by that of his wife, Mama Regina, who briefed the gathering on the development programmes her husband’s administration would pursue.

Mr Lowassa told his sizeable audience that his 30-year experience as Member of Parliament has taught him that women are faithful voters.

The presidential candidate appealed to them to vote for him en masse as well as influencing their associates, including their husbands and other family members, to do the same.

Mr Lowassa did not give a hint of his party’s development plan, saying their election manifesto was still being prepared.

Earlier, National Chadema Chairman, Mr Freeman Mbowe, said that the UKAWA campaigns would be launched at the Jangwani Grounds in Dar es Salaam this Saturday.

He said it was historic that political parties had come together for the first time to contest as one force. He claimed it was God’s plan for Mr Lowassa to leave his CCM and join the opposition to create a firm ground for change.National NCCR-Mageuzi Chairman James Mbatia called for peaceful campaigns, also noting that women were the mothers of the nation who needed a reliable medical care system.

Mrs Lowassa said it was time to bring change and asked women to make favourable choices, adding that women experience many challenges that sometimes affect their dignity.

She touched on issues like agriculture, education and energy, noting that they were essential to women’s livelihood in daily engagements.

She praised her husband as a hard worker and who takes the human rights issue seriously. Human rights activist Gema Akilimali told the meeting that it was important to strongly consider women’s rights and prepare gender-sensitive national budgets.
