“Efforts from the Tanzanian Embassy in Saudi Arabia, the Tanzania Hajj Mission and leaders of institutions responsible for transporting pilgrims to Mecca have identified one body belonging to Tanzania as Shafi Khamis Ali who travelled to the holy land through Ahlu Daawa institution, bringing the total number of Tanzanians who died in the incident to five, “the statement read in part. The ministry has also received reports that another Tanzanian has been found alive but with injuries. He has been identified as Nasra Nassor Abdallah. “One of the Tanzanian victims of the stampede, Mahjabin Taslim Khan, sustained serious injuries that have led to the amputation of his leg. Khan is still receiving treatment and his condition is improving,” the statement noted.
The statement added that other Tanzanians who completed their pilgrimage on September 26, started their journey back home.
Another statement to the media from Mufti Abubakar Zuberi, who is in Saudi Arabia, corroborated the information issued by the ministry urging Muslims and Tanzanians in general to pray and assist families who lost their loved ones in the stampede.
The stampede occurred last Thursday morning during the ritual known as ‘stoning the devil’ in the tent city of Mina, about two miles from Mecca, Islam’s holiest city.
