Hamad to concede defeat ‘if polls are fair’!

CIVIC United Front (CUF), presidential candidate Seif Sharif Hamad, yesterday celebrated his 72nd birthday promising to concede defeat in Sunday’s polls if they will be free and fair.

Thousands of CUF supporters, sang and danced at the Maisara ground, where they witnessed Mr Hamad, cut a special birthday cake. “Thank you for the birthday gift, however I ask you to vote for me on Sunday.

I promise to concede defeat if the elections will be free and fair. I ask all my rivals to give a similar pledge,” he said. If elected, he promised to follow in the footsteps of Zanzibar’s First President, the late Abeid Amani Karume, formed an inclusive government, to provide employment to the youth and to improve social services.

“I’ll reform and improve the welfare of the military, ensure efficiency at ports to attract more ships and to make all pensioners lead decent lives,” Mr Hamad said, promising to have zero tolerance on corruption.

However, the presidential hopeful raised concern people who allegedly beat and injure CUF supporters. “I ask President Jakaya Kikwete to work closely with President Dr Ali Mohamed, in ensuring that Tanzania and Zanzibar remain peaceful during elections. Some dishonest leaders should not be allowed to plunge this country into chaos. We all love peace,” said Mr Hamad.

Other speakers at the last CUF campaign gathering in Unguja, included Mr Juma Duni Haji (presidential running mate for Chadema), Ms Janet Fusi (Chadema), Mr Eddy Riamy, Mr Mzee Hassan Nassor Moyo, Mr Mansour Yussuf Himid, Mr Ismail Jussa Ladu and Mr Nassor Ahmed Mazrui.

“We pray for peaceful elections, but we want all members of the security forces to remain impartial and friendly to the people,” said Mr Himid.
