Ukawa furious over Union presidential election results

Chadema chairman Freeman Mbowe.
The Opposition coalition Ukawa yesterday claimed that presidential results that are being announced by the National Electoral Commission (NEC) had been tampered with to favour the ruling party CCM.

Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam, Chadema chairman Freeman Mbowe, NCCR-Mageuzi chairman, James Mbatia and Chadema deputy chairman (Mainland) Abdallah Safari alleged that what NEC chairman (rtd) Judge Damian Lubuva has been announcing to the nation since Monday did not correspond with what they tallied from their own agents.

The three leaders claimed that unreal votes had been given to CCM candidate John Magufuli at the expense of Chadema candidate who is endorsed by Ukawa, Edward Lowassa whose votes are being reduced in a scheme aimed at denying him victory.

Results announced by yesterday showed that  Magufuli was in clear lead while Lowassa was trailing.

They gave examples of Tunduma constituency where NEC announced that Lowassa got 6,000 while according to their own figures, Lowassa actually polled 32,442 votes. In Tandahimba, NEC gave Magufuli 49,998 whereas in their tallying, the CCM candidate was given additional 2,810 votes which  he did not receive, they claimed.

“We do not recognize the results that are being announced by Lubuva,” said Mbowe: “We will meet tomorrow and issue a statement on way forward.”

He added that the coalition needed to act quickly because according to the constitution Presidential results cannot be challenged in the court of law once announced by the electoral body.
