War on poverty, corruption to be stepped up with CCM in power!

WITH a day to go before the general election tomorrow, CCM Union presidential candidate, Dr John Magufuli, has promised to effectively implement his party's 2015-2020 manifesto, which focuses on eradication of poverty and curbing petty and grand corruption.

The manifesto, which was handed to him by CCM National Chairman President Jakaya Kikwete during the launch of campaign on August 23, cites other areas of focus as reducing unemployment rate and preserving peace and security.

"These four issues highlighted in the manifesto will effectively be implemented under my government should Tanzanians elect me for the job," the presidential hopeful made the pledge yesterday at a campaign rally held at Jangwani Grounds in Dar es Salaam.

He vowed to take serious measures to curb petty and grand corruption, citing a quotation from the late Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere - that tackling the vice should be as serious as dealing with treason.

Dr Magufuli as well pledged to curb traffic congestion in Dar es Salaam through expansion of existing major roads and erection of flyovers at busy junctions, in addition to construction of ring and feeder roads in the outskirts of the city.

The presidential candidate also spoke of a pilot project to improve social amenities in 14 wards in Dar es Salaam, in which 117 million US dollars (about 234bn/-) have been allocated to construct roads, drainage and other social facilities.

If elected, he said, his government will improve water accessibility in Dar es Salaam from the current 68 to 95 per cent of the population in the city. Earlier, CCM National Chairman, President Jakaya Kikwete, said he was optimistic that the party's flag bearer for the Union presidency, Dr Magufuli will sail through to clinch the highest office. On the other hand, the Head of State and Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces assured Tanzanians that peace will prevail during and after the election tomorrow.

"Even the High Court has ruled to effect that polling stations are not meant for assemblies of people, I can assure the citizen of peace and nothing will happen to them during the Election Day," President Kikwete said in regard to a court ruling forbidding people to gather at stations after casting votes. Mr Kikwete expressed optimism that the CCM presidential aspirant had all it takes to succeed him as Head of State.

"All signs show that you have already won the election; you have done a good job by traversing the country using roads to reach out to the people," President Kikwete said. President Kikwete went on to recall that when he was seeking re-election in the year 2010 he travelled over 32,000 kilometres and yet Dr Magufuli has made it to 46,221 kilometres.

Mr Kikwete maintained during the rally that the procedure of nominating Dr Magufuli followed proper procedures, stressing that the party defectors were annoyed because their candidate of choice was not endorsed.

He tasked Dr Magufuli to increase the amount of funds allocated to provide loans to students in higher learning institutions. "When I assumed power, only 16,000 students were accessing loans to the tune of 40bn/-, but the amount has now increased to 350bn/- in which 98,000 students are benefiting. It is my hope that Dr Magufuli will allocate more funds for this purpose," he urged.

Earlier, the Secretary of Tanzania Drivers' Association, Mr Rashidi Salehe, said Dr Magufuli was the right person to solve problems facing drivers countrywide. "Dr Magufuli has proved his leadership ability in the works ministry; he spent days and nights to improve road network in the country," he remarked. Mr Salehe went on to blame opposition parties for being behind strikes by drivers with an aim of creating hatred between the people and the government.
