200 sailors dispatched in oil, gas exploration!

IN a move to reduce unemployment rate in the country local seafarers will send more than 200 sailors in drill ships prospecting for oil and gas in the Indian Ocean. Speaking in Dar es Salaaam yesterday, renowned maritime instructor and Chairman of Seafarers Community, Mr Charles Chagula, said the process of providing the group with insurance was in the final stages and soon they will be finalising the signing of crucial contracts.

“The Tanzania Seafarers Community will provide insurance to those 200 sailor by 80 per cent and later 20 per cent will be fulfilled after a month another group of 200 sailors will be sent to the ships with the aim to improve the welfare of Tanzanians,” said Chagula.

He added, “The community has more than 5,000 sailors in the whole country,” Mr Chagula said in accordance with the laws of Tanzania shipping business, for a sailor to go to the sea he/she must have insurance, adding in few days to come they will announce the names of the first group.

Expounding further, he said the issue of employment was a major problem for sailors something which pushed them to be more creative, there were many employment opportunities in the sea not only in the area of oil and gas, but other opportunities have not been explored.

Moreover, he said their community has received approval from the Tanzania Ports Authority (TPA) for mariners into the area to do any work needed there.

Mr Chagula also said the police force in the country, through the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ernest Mangu has given them permit for the community to also get involved in the issue of security to reduce terrorism in the area.

Chairman Community, Mr Frank Chuma, said the Chinese government has agreed to cooperate with them in fisheries activities and they were ready to bring their gears to help revive the activities in the country. He said they were still holding talks for them to sign important agreements before they commence the activities.
