A Saudi businesswoman, who had Dh2 million in cash and precious jewellery in her 44th floor apartment in the fire-hit Address Downtown Hotel, feared the worst when she saw the door to her apartment smashed in. However, she was pleasantly surprised and relieved when she found her precious belongings neatly bagged inside her apartment.
Thanks to the integrity of the Dubai Civil Defence and the police, over 350 hotel residents have got their belongings back intact after a New Year's Eve fire ravaged through the 60-storey building.
Major-General Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police for Criminal Investigation, said the police and civil defence officials escorted the residents to their apartments so that they could take their belongings. The officials provided juice and drinking water to the residents as they were allowed to inspect their damaged flats.Colonel Abdulla Khadem bin Soroor, Director of the Bur Dubai police station, told Khaleej Times that the owner of a restaurant at the hotel found the Dh100,000 he had left in his apartment. The cash was the revenue for the day, he said. It was covered with dust, but not affected by the fire.
Major Hussein Mohammed Al Rahomi, Coordinator of the Dubai Civil Defence, said the firemen were instructed to collect the residents' belongings and place it in bags safely till the owners could collect them.
Civil Defence personnel used the stairs to go to each flat of the skyscraper to bag the belongings, as the lifts were not working, he said.
Meanwhile, Emaar has said it will soon begin restoring the hotel to all its glory on instructions from His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
