CCM endorses Magufuli’s campaign against graft

CHAMA Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) has overwhelmingly backed the way the Fifth Phase Government is conducting its business, noting that it is in line with the party’s election manifesto.

The Party’s National Chairman and former President Jakaya Kikwete said here yesterday that CCM was satisfied by the speed in which the Fifth phase government is delivering campaign pledges, adding that the party would always back him to ensure that people continue trusting the ruling party.

He gave kudos to Dr Magufuli insisting: “Tanzanians are happy that you are delivering your promises and the party will accord you any necessary support in your endeavours.”

Amid cheers from the party supporters, members and supporters who turned out at the party’s 39th Anniversary celebrations at the Namfua Grounds, Mr Kikwete said for 90 days that Dr Magufuli has so far spent in office, he has managed to intensify the war against corruption, reducing the size of the government, increasing government revenue sources and collections.Mr Kikwete said CCM respects the decision by Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) chairman, Mr Jecha Salum Jecha to announce the repeat of the election because it had the mandate to do so.

“ZEC has the powers to supervise election, and because it stated that the October 25 General Election was marred with irregularities we have no any other option than accepting that decision,” he said adding that his party decided to respect the decision although it was not happy as majority of its members were set for jubilation after clinching victory.

Mr Kikwete asked Zanzibar residents to prepare for fresh election on March 20 urging them to turn out in bigger numbers on that date.

“Keep your voter cards so that you can vote for CCM candidates because that is the only way to make our party remain in power,” he added.

The party chairman who was giving his last speech as the party chairman on its anniversary celebrations said the opposition will remain weaker because the ruling party was still strong that is why it excelled in the last General Election that saw President John Magufuli clinching victory.

He said there was no doubt that majority Tanzanians still believe in CCM because it managed to get 194 elective parliamentary seats out of 264 which is equivalent to 73 per cent while obtaining 2,834 councillorship seats out of 3,931 an equivalent of 73.3 per cent.

“These figures show that we are more accepted and it undoubtedly tells that the opposition is not accepted by majority Tanzanians,” he noted.

However, he said, the last election was very competitive posing a challenge to the ruling party, something he said should not be underestimated.

He said the party should now begin preparing for 2020 General Election by ensuring that it implemented the party manifesto including fulfilling the promises that were given during the last election campaign.

The party’s Secretary General, Abdulrahman Kinana said some of the decisions instituted by Dr Magufuli were painful but there was no means because they were long overdue.

He urged all members of the party inside and outside the government to help Dr Magufuli in the implementation of the party’s manifesto.

On his part, Dr Magufuli said he would implement the party’s manifesto fully asking all leaders to ensure that they were discharging their duties as required, asking lazy leaders to stay aside if they cannot work for Tanzanians.

Dr Magufuli who is set to replace Mr Kikwete as the party’s chairman further asked all Regional Commissioners, District Commissioners and District Executive Directors to ensure that they work on problems bedeviling Tanzanians.

In another development Prominent Chadema cadres, Rachel Mashishanga and Christowaja Mtinda yesterday defected to the ruling party after ditching the opposition party. The two were former Special Seats law makers but lost their seats after the October 25 General Election.

According to the party’s Ideology and Publicity Secretary, Nape Nnauye, 30,000 new members joined the ruling part in Singida.
