Researchers Create Battery-Free Cellphone!

Researchers from the University of Washington have made what they believe to be the first cellphone that doesn't require a battery. Instead of drawing power from a battery, the rudimentary proof-of-concepts harvest the necessary 3.5 microwatts of power from light using tiny solar cells, or from ambient radio signals.

Made of commercial, off-the-shelf (COTS) components, the phone works by placing calls through Skype. To make a call, the user enters the number and the phone transmits the information to a base station. The base station places the call via Skype, and the phone receives the signal and plays the audio through earbuds. The base is also responsible for supplying the ambient power, as long as it's less than 31 feet away, that the cellphone uses to harvest energy.

Longest hanging pedestrian bridge in the world opens near Swiss town of Zermatt!

The world’s longest hanging pedestrian bridge opened Saturday in the Swiss Alps near the town of Zermatt. The structure measures 494 meters in length and hangs 85 meters above the Grabengufer ravine.

The Zermatt Tourist board claims it’s the world’s longest hanging bridge, although a similar bridge in Austria hangs 110m higher off the ground.

The bridge took ten weeks to construct and its cables alone weigh roughly 7,257 kg (15,998 lbs), according to the Zermatt tourism board.

SwissRope, the company responsible for the structure, included a special dampener with an anti-swing feature to prevent any unfortunate accidents with hikers experiencing a sudden case of vertigo, reports Stuttgarter-Zeitung.

The bridge is located along the Europaweg trail, a two-day hiking route between Zermatt and Grachen that offers a spectacular view of the 4,478 meter-high Matterhorn.

It replaces a similar bridge that was closed in 2010 due to rockfall damage, which forced hikers to climb 500m down into the valley and back up again.

"We received three complaints from victims that their braids were cut by someone. Prima facie, it appears a notorious gang is behind such cases as some residents have also complained of robberies. We suspect three youths caught on closed-circuit television footage," Deputy Commissioner of Police Surender Kumar said.

Eight people killed in Dhofar road accident

Royal Oman Police has said that eight people died, which included five Omanis and three expatriates, following a vehicle collision around 11.30pm on Sunday. The accident occurred in the Qatbit area, around 275km from Salalah. The injured have been admitted to the hospital in Thumrait. According to sources one of the vehicle was Lexus 430, which was traveling at a high speed.  The second vehicle was a taxi.

LONDON: A British court on Monday rejected an attempt by a former Iraqi general to bring a private prosecution against former Prime Minister Tony Blair over the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Blair’s decision to join the US-led coalition that toppled Saddam Hussein has tainted the legacy of his 10 years in office, and his critics in Britain and Iraq have been calling for him to face criminal action for years.
Iraqi General Abdel Waheed Shannan al Rabbat has been trying to bring a private prosecution against Blair and two of his former senior ministers for what his lawyers described as the crime of aggression.

SAINT PETERSBURG: President Vladimir Putin on Sunday oversaw a pomp-filled display of Russia’s naval might as the Kremlin paraded its sea power from the Baltic Sea to the shores of Syria. Some 50 warships and submarines were on show along the Neva River and in the Gulf of Finland off the country’s second city of Saint Petersburg after Putin ordered the navy to hold its first ever parade on such a grand scale. “Today much is being done to develop and modernise the navy,” Putin told servicemen after surveying the military hardware.

“The navy is not only dealing with its traditional tasks but also responding with merit to new challenges, making a significant contribution to the fight against terrorism and piracy.” The showcase event to mark Russia’s annual Navy Day is the latest to be beefed up by Putin, with the Kremlin strongman also bolstering the traditional WWII victory parade in Moscow as he looks to flex the country’s military muscles. Russia has ramped up its military manoeuvres as ties with the West have slumped over Moscow’s meddling in Ukraine. — AFP

UK govt divided on free movement after Brexit!

LONDON: Allowing free movement of people after Britain leaves the European Union would not “keep faith” with the Brexit vote, the international trade secretary said, underling divisions in the government over the issue.
Liam Fox told the Sunday Times that senior government ministers had not reached a consensus on retaining free movement of people for a transitional period, a proposal outlined by finance minister Philip Hammond on Friday.
Hammond had said should be no immediate changes to immigration or trading rules when Britain leaves the EU in March 2019, and the status quo could endure until mid-2022.
“If there have been discussions on that, I have not been party to them,” Fox told the newspaper.

Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price said he would implement Obamacare because it is currently the law.

14-year-old girl raped twice in separate attacks in UK!

• Teenager was raped at station then raped again when she asked for help.

A 14-year-old girl was raped twice on the same night in separate incidents in Birmingham.

The police arrested two men, aged 35 and 27, The Independent reports.

The first assault took place at a secluded part of Witton railway station close to the Aston Villa football ground, between 8pm on Tuesday and 2am the following morning, detectives said.

Shortly after that attack, the girl walked out of the station shortly after the attack and flagged down a passing vehicle to ask for help. However, she was raped a second time by another man after getting into the car.

A woman in Ohio was delighted to rescue a 5 1/2-foot long boa constrictor, until it wrapped itself around her neck and bit her face.

The panicky lady called 911 and told the dispatcher: "Please hurry. He's biting my nose."

"I've never heard of this before," the dispatcher is heard saying in a recording of the woman's call, reports WHIOTV.

Having received the distress call, the firefighters and police swung into action. They reached the woman's home in Sheffield Lake, a community about 40km west of Cleveland in Lorain County. Two killed, four wounded in German nightclub shooting!

• The motive for the shooting is unclear.

A gunman opened fire at a nightclub in southern Germany early Sunday, killing one and wounding four before being shot by police, officials said in a statement.

The 34-year-old attacker "was critically injured in a shootout with police officers as he left the disco, and later succumbed to his wounds in hospital," police said in a statement.

"The motives of the man, who probably acted alone, are not known yet," they said.

Officers began receiving emergency calls from terrified clubbers at around 4:30 am (0230 GMT) after the man began shooting in the nightclub in an industrial zone in the city of Constance, killing one person on the spot and leaving three other people seriously wounded.

Shortly after he left the building, he was shot by police. One officer was also injured in the exchange of fire.



Terrified nightclubbers had either fled the building or found a place to hide, police said, adding that the danger was now over.

Helicopters were circling overhead and special forces were also deployed to secure the site.

8,500 soldiers sent to Rio to curb street violence!

Rio de Janeiro: Brazilian President Michel Temer ordered Friday 8,500 troops to Rio de Janeiro, in an attempt to curb a surge in violence in the coastal city.

The troops, who will be deployed until the end of the year, are to be assisted by an extra 1,500 police, members of the national guard and other security personnel.

In the first half of the year, over 2,700 people were murdered in Rio de Janeiro, a 10.2 per cent increase in comparison to the same period last year, according to official figures.

Ninety-one police officers have also been killed in Rio since January.

Iran rules out halt to ballistic missile tests!

Tehran: A defiant Iran vowed on Saturday to press ahead with its missile programme and condemned new US sanctions, as tensions rise after the West hardened its tone against the Islamic republic.
In the latest incident on the ground, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said the US Navy had approached their patrol vessels in the Gulf and fired flares.
“At 4 pm (1130 GMT) on Friday, the supercarrier USS Nimitz and its accompanying warship, while being monitored by the Guards’ frigates, flew a helicopter near the Resalat oil and gas platform and approached the force’s ships,” the paramilitary force said.
“The Americans in a provocative and unprofessional move, sent a warning message to the frigates and fired flares,” it said.
The Guards “ignored the unconventional move by the US ships and continued their mission.”
Three days earlier, a US Navy patrol ship fired warning shots at a Guards boat in the Gulf as it closed in on the American vessel, according to US officials.

VENEZUELA: Maduro presses on with Venezuela vote despite protests!

Caracas: Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro was pushing forward on Saturday with a controversial weekend vote, despite growing domestic political opposition, international condemnation and deadly street protests.
On Friday, his forces faced small groups of protesters defying a ban he had imposed on demonstrations against the election he has called on Sunday to choose a new body to rewrite the constitution.
Blockades went up across a few roads in Caracas and in a border town with Colombia, San Cristobal as well as in Maracaibo and Guayana, but the scale was far less than the mass protests seen earlier this week before the ban took effect.
“It’s normal that there’s fear, but people are still coming out into the streets despite it all,” a lawmaker in the opposition-controlled National Assembly, Freddy Guevara, said at one of the Caracas protests. Maduro on Thursday warned that anyone taking part in protests against his “Constituent Assembly” risked up to 10 years in prison.

Shahbaz to succeed Nawaz Sharif, Abbasi as interim PM!

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s ousted prime minister Nawaz Sharif named his brother Shahbaz, the chief minister of Punjab province, as his successor and nominated ex-oil minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi as an interim premier in a defiant speech on Saturday.
The announcement charts a way forward for Pakistan after the Supreme Court ousted Sharif on Friday following an investigation into corruption allegations against him and his family, bringing to an unceremonious end his historic third term in power and briefly plunging the country into political uncertainty.
“I support Shahbaz Sharif after me but he will take time to contest elections so for the time being I nominate Shahid Khaqan Abbasi,” Sharif said in a televised speech to his party.
The younger Sharif holds only a provincial seat, so must be elected to the national assembly before becoming the new prime minister.
Earlier on Saturday the Election Commission of Pakistan confirmed fresh elections would be held in Nawaz Sharif’s former constituency.

North Korea claims new missile puts whole of US in strike range!

SEOUL/TOKYO: North Korea fired a missile on Friday that experts said was capable of reaching cities in the United States.
The US and South Korean military officials responded by discussing military options.
The unusual late-night launch added to exasperation in Washington, Seoul and Tokyo over North Korea’s continuing development of nuclear weapons and intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) to deliver them.
North Korean President Kim Jong-Un’s military raised alarms early this month with an ICBM launch.
“As a result of their launches of ICBM-level missiles, this clearly shows the threat to our nation’s safety is severe and real,” said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, who planned to call a meeting of his National Security Council. Following a meeting of South Korea’s National Security Council, South Korean President Moon Jae-In said he wanted the UN Security Council to discuss new and stronger sanctions against the North, the presidential Blue House said.
