Germany gives Tanzania 380bn/- to fight poverty

5th October 2012
Germany Ambassador to Tanzania, Klaus-Peter Brandes
The German government has given to Tanzania over Euro 190 million (380bn/-) for a period of three years to fight poverty and to improve service delivery, particularly in rural areas.
German ambassador to Tanzania Klaus-Peter Brandes said during the signing ceremony yesterday that the amount was the largest amount Germany has ever committed to support Tanzania in its development.
“Today we have signed a historic commitment. Over the last five decades, German bilateral cooperation with Tanzania has amounted to almost 1.8 billion Euro. I am happy to state that today Tanzania counts among the largest beneficiaries of German development cooperation in sub-Saharan Africa.
"We will continue to work together in order to achieve our common goal - to fight poverty and to improve the quality of service delivery for all Tanzanians, particularly in remote and rural areas,” the envoy said.
Brandes said both governments agreed that the main areas of support for the grant covering the period 2012 – 2014 would remain – according to the priorities of the Tanzanian government - water, health, natural resources and energy, including renewable energy.
In addition, Germany would continue providing General Budget Support.
He said through the grant, Germany expected people in several urban centres in the country would get access to clean water, immunization would be accelerated so every citizen can be vaccinated, and a new Baobab maternity hospital managed by CCBRT in Dar es Salaam would be constructed to improve birth outcomes.
For his part, Finance minister Dr William Mgimwa, who signed the agreement for Tanzania, said the grant was the second largest after issued in 2009 when Germany extended to Tanzania a total of euro147 million.
He said among sectors that would benefit from the grant are public financial management reform programmes, water, health, energy, National Audit Office, local governance and study and expert fund.
He said the government had also signed with Germany a grant contribution amounting to euro 14million (about 28bn/-) through GAVI alliance to support immunization programme in the country.
The minister clarified that the government would use the funds to support various sectors and programmes in the country.
“The government aims at spending euro 18 million on general budget, euro 2 million on the public financial management reform programme, euro 45 million on the water sector, euro 42.5 million on health and euro 26million on energy.
Other uses are euro 31.5 on natural resources, euro 3.5 million on National Audit Office, euro 6.5 million on local government and euro 1 million on study and expert fund.
The minister acknowledged the good relations existing between Germany and Tanzania and assured the ambassador of the ministry’s commitment to the implementation of the intended programmes and projects.
He said successful implemention of the programs and projects would contribute significantly to national economic growth and reduction of poverty and thus improve the social and economic well-being of the people.
“I want to pledge that the government will make close monitoring to ensure that the quality of work meets the acceptable professional standards,” he said.
The ambassador, for his part, voiced his appreciation for Tanzania’s cooperation and implementation of the previous grants and vowed to extend further support in future, particularly for energy.
