Exam Candidates Faint in Zanzibar

BY ISSA YUSSUF, 3 DECEMBER 2012
Zanzibar — MORE than 20 students fell unconscious in examination centres in various parts of Zanzibar during the Form II National Examinations which ended on Saturday.
Some students could not either sit or complete their examinations after the ordeal which is linked to superstition. "We had a challenging moment. In some cases we had to delay the examinations.
The situation also disturbed other candidates," said one of the security officers who requested anonymity because he was not an official spokesperson. Some students at Mwanakwerekwe and Haile-Selassie secondary schools confirmed to the 'Daily News' that they saw some of their colleagues undergoing the ordeal.
Mr Abdallah Mzee, the Deputy Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Vocational training, said that the Standard Seven and From Two examinations progressed well but "We had a number of cases whereby some fell unconscious."
"There was also a car accident in which some examination officers suffered minor injuries," said Mzee. He added that due to tight security and close follow-up cheating attempts by students were foiled. A total of 24,932 students registered for the 2012 Standard Seven exams.
