OMAN: Downpour drenches Muscat

Fri, 28 December 2012

By A Staff Reporter -
MUSCAT — A relatively brief, but intense, downpour drenched much of the capital city, among other northern and coastal areas of the Sultanate yesterday evening.
In Muscat Governorate light rains fell on Athaiba, Ansab, Gala, Khuwair, Qurum, Wuttaya, Darsait, Al Washl, Al Jidan, Al Areen, Ruwi, the Commercial District, Wadi Kabir and Al Amerat. The unusual damp weather, linked to shamal winds blowing in from the northern parts of the Arabian Peninsula, was also preceded by windy conditions that deposited a

The downpour caught many of Muscat's inhabitants unawares although partially overcast skies during the course of the day did threaten the prospect of rain.
Those out and about enjoying the day's otherwise delightful outdoors, scrambled for cover or simply made their way home in anticipation of worsening weather conditions.
The rains also upended a number of private and public outdoor engagements, although none of a high-profile nature. Several parts of the Sultanate

Al Dakhiliyah Governorate experienced light rains in the areas of Madra, Khubar, Haboub in the Wilayat of Samaiyl. Rains were also light in the areas of Fanja and Malina in the Wilayat of Bid Bid.
Heavy rains fell on North Al Batinah Governorate in the centre of the Wilayat

The Met offices forecasts partially cloudy
skies in the governorates of Muscat, Musandam, South Al Batinah and North Al Sharqiyah with the probability of intermittent showers.
The weather is predicted to be fine or partially cloudy in other parts of the Sultanate with a chance of convective clouds in the Hajar mountains which will cause rainfall in the afternoon and evening.
Dust is likely to prevail in most of the Sultanate’s governorates with northerly to east-northerly moderate winds which are expected to be active in the coastal areas.
