President Jakaya yesterday met the United Nations (UN) military advisor Lieutenant General Babacar Gaye at the State House for talks.
The talks focused on the state of affairs in the eastern parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo where M 23 rebels are waging war against the Kinshasa administration.
President Kikwete briefed the UN military advisor about efforts being made by African leaders and stakeholders from the Great Lakes and SADC region to resolve conflicts setting apart the two Congolese sides.
According to a statement issued to press yesterday by the Directorate of Presidential Communications, President Kikwete specifically briefed Lieutenant General Gaye on the efforts by leaders from Africa through SADC and International Conference on Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) in trying to resolve the conflict.

President Kikwete informed his guest that among other issues African leaders agreed is the formation of a special military unit that would be sent to the war zone for a peace keeping mission.
Lieutenant General Gaye on his part told President Kikwete that the UN was ready to cooperate with DRC’s neighbouring countries in resolving the conflict.
After the talks with the president Lieutenant General Gaye left for Uganda to meet President Yoweri Museveni, the current ICGLR chairman, the statement added.
