They made the call yesterday at a public rally in Dar es Salaam, where they also demanded the resignation of the Minister for Home Affairs, Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi.
One of the members Sheikh Kondo Juma Bungo said as they are waiting the formation of an independent commission into the shooting of Sheikh Ponda.
They said Minister Nchimbi should resign for failing to hold accountable policemen who have been shooting innocent people.
They also asked for legal measures to be instituted against the Morogoro Regional Police Commander Faustine Shilogile and the police officer who shot Sheikh Ponda.
The Secretary of the Council of Muslim Organisations in Tanzania, Sheikh Ponda Issa Ponda was admitted to Muhimbili Orthopedic Institute (MOI) early last week after sustaining arm injuries allegedly from shots fired by police when they were trying to apprehend him in Morogoro.
However, on Thursday last week Ponda was taken to Segerea remand prison after he was charged at his hospital bed with inciting and preaching hatred speeches in against the government
Reading the charges to him at his bedside in hospital, the Kisutu Resident Magistrate Hellen Riwa, Senior State Attorney Tumaini Kweka said between June 2 and August 11 this year, at different places within the country, the cleric did incite violence. The case is scheduled for mention on August the 28, this year.
On August 10 this year, police in Morogoro Municipality accused Sheikh Ponda for violating terms of his release alleging that he was conducting ‘provocative religious gatherings.’
