Sultanate roads are third best in world
By A Staff Reporter —
MUSCAT — Oman ranks third globally in road
quality sub-category, moving two ranks in the sub-category which measures the
quality of roads, according to results released by the Global Competitiveness
Report issued by the World Economic Forum (WEF). Giving a statement on the
occasion, Dr Ahmed bin Mohammed al Futaisi, Minister of Transport and
Communications, said that such an achievement is a result of the attention
accorded by His Majesty Sultan Qaboos to the road sector.
Dr Futaisi said:
“Over the last 43 years, the Sultanate has developed a huge network of roads
despite its rough topography and rugged nature which increase the cost of
construction of roads. Currently the Sultanate boasts world-class road networks
spanning its length and breadth.
“The ministry has so far built thousands of kilometres
of roads in all the governorates with construction of new packages of vital
roads now under way which are considered to be the biggest road projects in
Oman’s history and are expected to bring about huge economic benefits during
the upcoming years.” The government has prepared a structural plan for the
development of the road network for 25 years (2006-2030) and the priorities
include population density, socioeconomic importance, traffic flow and other factors.
