BY THE GUARDIAN REPORTER

25th November 2013

Export Processing Zone Authority (EPZA)
Announcing the total value of exports from the Export Processing Zone Authority (EPZA) has reached USD 700 million, the government has expressed commitment to ensure investment continues and improves.

Speaking during the opening of Africa Industrialisation Day in Dar es salaam over the Weekend Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda asserted that the government recognises the contribution of EPZA to the country.

As such, Pinda said, the government will ensure investment in the special economic zones continues and improves for the benefit of investors and the country at large because: “EPZA continues to encourage the growth of industries.”

The authority has so far already occasioned at least 81 established factories in various parts of the country.

“The total value of investment of these factories is over USD 1.12 billion and they have created 27,000 direct employment as well another 80,000 jobs indirectly,” he said.

“The economic processing zones are catalysts speeding up the growth of our economy…creating employment through industrial development,” he noted.
He called upon both local and foreign investors to invest in the Special Economic Zones and the Export Processing Zones underscoring their ability to create employment as well as secure sustainable development.

According to statistics, contribution of the industrial sector to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) rose from 9.6 percent in 2010/2011 to 9.9 percent in 2011/2012. Direct employment in the sector rose from 115,022 in 2011 to 120,840 in 2012.

Africa Industrialisation Day is celebrated on November 20 each year. It is a time when governments and organizations in many African countries examine ways to stimulate the industrialisation process. This year’s theme was: Job creation and entrepreneurship development: a means to accelerate industrialisation in Africa.
