The country’s “barren desert climate” may be at the heart of the country’s iron will and determination to surmount all obstacles, said His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
Writing in a foreword to the English language ‘The Business Year: Dubai 2013’ edition, Shaikh Mohammed underscored the country’s desire to achieve a number one ranking across all global indices, citing the UAE’s five-place jump up this year’s Global Competitiveness Index to number 19.
“Perhaps the UAE’s barren desert climate gave birth to unequivocal will and an unparalleled sense of purpose to overcome every challenge it encountered. Hence it remarkably transformed itself in a very short time into a beacon of success and development in the region,” Shaikh Mohammed wrote.

The country had done so by investing in human capital and building sustainable infrastructure — arenas it would continue to pour investment into — in order to establish the country as the main gate for trade in the region and beyond. “Today, we feel proud of our world class and highly ranked sea and air ports which have strongly positioned the UAE as a main hub for trade and travel worldwide.”

Shaikh Mohammed continued the message when he met 25 Kuwaiti university students, telling them positive energy was the key to success. State news agency Wam reported Shaikh Mohammed recognised the “wise leadership” of the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and hard work of thousands of teams who worked under his direct supervision.
“He added that these teams are gathered around team spirit which is the key of their success and the driving force behind their desire to continue developing on both personal and institutional levels,” the agency said.

He advised the students on the importance of expanding horizons and enriching knowledge through exchange programmes and the flow of knowledge and experiences in both directions, before taking photos with the students.
