Five helicopters, 800 broadcasters and much more for the most complicated live shoots ever attempted.
It’s showtime at midnight!
Five helicopters and a crew of 50 filmmakers will bring to life Dubai’s spectacular firework show as the city attempts to set a new world record for the largest firework display. At the stroke of midnight, months of planning and rehearsals will come to life with the world turning to Dubai for the show of a lifetime.
For millions of people watching the fireworks on television and online, the filming crew has left no stone unturned. Ian Russell, managing director of Sparkly Light UK, will be directing the show’s television broadcast and for him, the challenge is to capture every detail without the possibility of any retakes.
Speaking with Khaleej Times, Ian said: “The preparations are enormous.
The entire event is designed to be fantastic and spectacular.”
Five helicopters will film the action from an aerial perspective and 15 additional cameras have been rigged on towers. Showing the scale of the event is no easy task and coordinating with a team of film crew will be no easy feat.
“The firework effects are fantastic and they would look best when you look down at them aerially. We have to plan to get the best moments, the right way, and show the pattern and scale of the whole event,” he added.
Each helicopter will fly with a camera operator, radio frequency engineer and a technical crew for safety reasons.
“It is one of the most complicated live shoots ever attempted. The scale of this event is massive and this is one of the most challenging broadcast projects I have worked on,” he added.
A team of pyrotechnic experts from Fireworks by Grucci will fire more than 450,000 fireworks for the show. Phil Grucci, the man behind the show’s pyrotechnic design knows every bit of detail.
“Dubai wanted something very spectacular and they wanted to break the world record. A lot of work has been put into this show and it will all culminate today. There is a tremendous amount of responsibility for all the teams working with us,” said Phil.
A series of buttons will trigger the fireworks and the show will have multiple control centres, which will be connected to secure computers. A separate fireworks show will also take place at Burj Khalifa and the same company has designed the show.
“Burj Khalifa is an iconic building and it is a special privilege to be able to design for such a marvel. We will recreate 10 different themes with a pyrotechnic countdown,” he added.
The Burj Khalifa show will last over five minutes and it promises to be different with new designs planned to surprise audiences.
Residents and tourists planning to see both shows are being advised to use public transport and reach early to avoid traffic jams and road diversions.
