According to information received from Dar es Salaam, Air Tanzania earlier this week commenced flights from Dar to Zanzibar and Arusha again, after a prolonged absence from the two routes. Flights to Zanzibar were suspended some 4 years ago and flights to Arusha were in the past operated by jet aircraft into Kilimanjaro International before lack of suitable aircraft compelled ATCL to withdraw from that route, too.
Flying to the Arusha Municipal Airport, the scene some months ago of some unscheduled landing of an Ethiopian Airlines B767 jet aircraft, is Air Tanzania now able to once again connect the so called “Safari Capital of East Africa” with the beaches of Zanzibar, a much desired option for many upmarket travelers who would like to spend both safari and a beachside vacation in the same country.
Air Tanzania is using their Bombardier Q 300 turboprop on both routes and will according to the details given fly six times a week to both destinations. The airline also flies to Kigoma, Tabora, Mbeya, Mtwara, Mwanza as well as two international routes to Moroni/Comoros and Bujumbura/Burundi as the revived national airline of Tanzania is in the process of adding more aircraft and then more destinations to claw its way back into the market. After receiving a leased Bombardier CRJ200 a few months ago, when the airline talked of more such aircraft joining the fleet, they have kept the competition guessing when that will happen, so be sure to watch this space for breaking news from Tanzania’s aviation scene.
