Zanzibar Gets 13.5bn/ - Renewable Energy Grant

Zanzibar — THE European Union (EU) on Tuesday launched the "Zanzibar Non-State Actors Support Programme," with the aim to support good governance social accountability, participatory development and poverty reduction.
Ambassador Filiberto Ceriari Sebregondi, Head of the EU Delegation to Tanzania said at the launching ceremony held in Zanzibar that the project was in response to a request by national authorities, and would help Zanzibar's development.
He said that Zanzibar has been given 13.5bn/- grant to develop the islands' renewable energy and that funds include research into possible renewable energy.
"It has been long; we have been struggling to get alternative power production. Wind power is expected to provide a reliable source of energy," said Mr Ali Halil Mirza, Principle Secretary in the Ministry of Land, Water, Housing and Energy at the signing ceremony of the agreement with EU.
The support was part of the EU Day celebration held at the Grand Palace Hotel in the Stone town, where ministers, and officials from NGOs witnessed the signing of the agreement, anticipated to develop the energy sector.
Under the European Development Fund, It was said that the package of 6.8bn/- will support renewable energy technologies, the implementation of energy efficiency activities and the enhancement of the regulatory and institutional framework.
While, another 6.8bn/- has been allocated for non State Actors, to strengthen civil society-led initiatives on accountability, participatory development and policy advocacy, promoting dialogue between the revolutionary government of Zanzibar and non State Actors, strengthening social accountability and democratisation processes.
