Zanzibari President Ali Mohamed Shein has rejected demands from lawmakers requesting an increase in their daily allowances, citing strained economic circumstances, Tanzania's The Citizen reported Wednesday (May 14th).
The lawmakers are seeking a 50,000-shilling raise in their daily compensation, from 150,000 shillings ($91) to 200,000 shillings ($121).
The representatives cited several factors, including the high cost of living, to justify their request.
"The president has asked the [representatives] to accept the reality of the situation; he has appealed to them to remain calm for now, for once the Isles' economic fortunes change for the better, they will get the raise," Yahya Khamisi, clerk of the House of Representatives, told reporters.
Zanzibar representatives currently receive a compensation package of 4.5 million shillings ($2,730) monthly, including entitlements.
Lawmakers in the mainland parliament were granted a wage increase last week, with their daily pay increased from 200,000 shillings ($121) to 300,000 shillings ($182).
