Music Q&A: Daniel Pearson on Everton FC,
Springsteen and smashing his guitar on stage
Soulful singer talks to the ECHO ahead of his Zanzibar gig next month
DANIEL Pearson has supported Michael Kiwanuka and Willy Mason as well as playing live dates of his own in the UK and USA. Daniel’s soulful vocals have found themselves on the airwaves of BBC 6Music, BBC Introducing, XFM, Amazing Radio and Australia’s biggest radio station Triple J.
He headlines the Zanzibar on July 22 and ahead of that i caught up with him for this week’s music Q&A...
Tell us about your next Liverpool gig:
I'm playing The Zanzibar on Tuesday July 22 as part of a headline tour. These shows are acoustic, and it's going to be great to be out playing songs from my albums Satellites and Mercury State for people again.
Which song is stuck in your head today?
Little Monster by an awesome new rock band called Royal Blood - they've had a lot of hype and they're great.
What’s on your iPod/stereo today?
I've been playing a lot of 70's Neil Young at the moment. Amazing albums.
What was the first album you bought?
Probably something really uncool, like Phil Collins. I can't remember the album, but the first record I bought was TURTLE Power on 7 inch vinyl. In my defence I was only 7 years old!
Which musician do you most admire, and why?
Springsteen is the one for me. He's a legend. He's made so many brilliant albums, he can do rock n roll as well as anybody in history and he always does things with a lot of honesty and integrity.
What are your three favourite albums of all time?
That's a tough one. I'd have to go with Darkness On The Edge Of Town - Bruce Springsteen, Exile On Main Street - Rolling Stones and Nevermind - Nirvana. But that could change tomorrow!
Tell us about a great band we might not have heard of...
One of my favourite bands is an American band called The Gaslight Anthem. They're pretty popular, but I'm always amazed that more people don't love them like I do.
Have you ever been told you look like anyone famous?
Never! I guess that's a good thing.
If we ended up in a karaoke club, what would you sing?
My karaoke jam is Suspicious Minds by Elvis. I can always knock out a good version of that no matter how drunk I get.
What song would you like played at your funeral?
It's a cliche, but My Way by Frank Sinatra. That's what we all want to think right? That we did what we wanted when we were here.
What was your most embarrassing moment?
I had a guitar fall off when I was playing and smash onto the stage. The strap had broken and it was mid song. I grabbed my spare, tripped over a cable on the way back to the stage and dropped the spare too. It wasn't my finest hour.
What is your most treasured possession?
Pictures of me and my wife travelling around the USA. They're full of great memories and great places. I'm more into experiences than possessions and pictures like that keep me hungry for more.
What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever heard said or written about you?
I had a review of my last EP Escape Acts where the writer was just obsessed with the fact that I was English but didn't sound like most English bands. It was an American website, and he just kept mentioning my lack of Arctic Monkeys or Oasis accent.
I think he got to the songs in the final lines of the review. I also share a name with a gardening TV presenter, and one Italian review started off by saying how surprised they were that I'd turned my hand to music after a gardening career.
Facebook or Twitter?
Both useful, but definitely Twitter. It forces you to be smarter and less attention seeking.
Liverpool, Everton or Tranmere FC?
EVERTON. I'm a lifelong Toffees supporter and get to Goodison as much as I can.
Loving what Bobby's brought to the team this year, they're really moved up a notch. I hope he stays as long as Moyes did.
Close your eyes. If I was your fairy godmother, what would your three wishes be?
To keep my family and friends happy, to let me keep making good music and for Everton to win the league next year. That last one might be a stretch but life rewards the optimist.
