Zanzibar — AS countries mark the World Tourism Day (WTD) on Saturday, Zanzibar authorities say the number of tourists visiting the Islands has been admirably increasing.
Authorities from the Zanzibar Tourism Commission (ZTC) said here that the increase of tourists means a big boost in economy growth as the 80 per cent of the islands' foreign income comes from tourism.
"We mark this year's WTD with achievement in increasing the number of tourists from 169,000 in 2012 to more than 181,000 in 2013. We hope the number will increase," said Dr Ahmada Khatib, Chairperson, ZTC.
The WTD is marked on September 27, but ZTC informed journalists that the celebrations in Zanzibar will be marked tomorrow in Nungwi coastal village. The theme for 2014 is "Tourism and Community Development."
Mr Saleh Ramadhani Feruzi, the Director of ZTC said at the meeting that the increase of tourists is attributed to increasing adverts abroad and keeping tourist sites clean.
"We are working with the Municipal Council to keep the town clean," said Feruzi. Mr Feruzi said his office has been taking necessary measures to minimize abuse in tourism sector, and also promoting employment of Tanzanian citizens for various posts instead of foreigners.
He said this year's World Tourism Day (WTD) draws special attention to the role of tourism in contributing to sustainable future for all and community development. This focus is in line with the global transition to the Sustainable Development Goals as the guiding principle promoted by the UN.
