Spearheaded by the Hassan Maajar Trust (HMT) in association with Bank M the ‘A Desk for Every Child’ campaign seeks to avail 6000 desks to some 20,000 pupils in at least eight regions across the country. At a news conference yesterday in Dar es Salaam, HMT Chairperson Ambassador Mwanaidi Maajar said the event is scheduled to take place on October 31, 2014 at the Diamond Jubilee Hall in the city.
According to the chairperson, the event is expected to rise 500m/- and in total, the campaign which is now in its third phase, aims to rise 1bn/-.
“During phase one, which started in 2011, we managed to get at least 5,000 desks for 15,000 pupils and our target this time around has gone up to 6,000 to accommodate 20,000 pupils,” said the chairperson.
She said HMT is delighted to partner with Bank M in the campaign and is optimistic that they will reach the set target which she said will call for increased participation by all stakeholders.
In that wise, she called on other corporate and all well wishers to take part during the campaign.
Bank M Deputy CEO, Jacqueline Woiso said her bank is proud to be associated with HMT in what she described as ‘a noble cause’ and commended Hassan Maajar Trust for ‘a job well done in the first phase of the project.’
“We are extremely delighted that in such a short span of time we have been a key partner in a team that is gradually making sitting on the floor for pupils, history for thousands of Tanzanian children…this is just the beginning and we believe that collectively we will eventually largely solve one of the most serious problems in our public school system,” she said.
