BY NELSON KESSY

1st November 2014

Julius Nyerere International Airport (JNIA)
The recent released 2014 Report by ‘the guide to sleeping in airport’ has mentioned Julius Nyerere Airport (JNIA) in Dar es Salaam as one among the ten worst airports in Africa based on overall airport experience.

According to the Report, Africa has a reputation for having some of the worst airports on the planet with poor services like dirty floors and bathrooms including bribery incidents.

The survey tasked voters to submit stories relating to unfortunate airport experiences across the continent with regards to their hygienic conditions,  and other related issues where travellers were seriously unimpressed with 10 airports in Africa. It said besides, poor floors, hygienic conditions and bribery, Tanzania travellers also complained about the lack of air conditioning facilities despite the country’s high altitude temperatures.

The general transport navigational chaos, limited yet expensive restaurant options and questionable-effective security processes were also among the drawbacks putting the country at unsafe side.

The first worst airport in Africa in the report is Khartoum International Airport, Sudan (KRT), seconded by Kinshasa N’djili International Airport, Democratic Republic of the Congo (FIH), with Tripoli International Airport, Libya (TIP) and Julius Nyerere International Airport, Tanzania (DAR) being in the third and fourth position respectively.

Other airports include, Luanda Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport, Angola (LAD), Port Harcourt International Airport, Nigeria (PHC), Abuja Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Nigeria (ABV).

Also in the list are N’Djamena International Airport, Chad (NDJ), Accra Kotoka International Airport, Ghana (ACC) is and Lagos Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Nigeria (LOS)
The report adds that “travelers passing through these airports often prefer to skip the airport sleeping experience altogether and splurge to nearby hotels. Should you be stuck in any of these airports due to delays, bring a whole lot of patience, because you’ll need it”.

Despite that, the report says Africa still has some best airports if compared to other airport in other regions in terms of comfortability, conveniences, sanitation and customer service.

The top five best airports based on overall airport experience according to the survey include Johannesburg’s O.R. Tambo International Airport (JNB), Cape Town International Airport (CPT), Durban King Shaka International Airport (DUR) all based in South Africa.

Others include Algiers Houari Boumediene International Airport (ALG) Algeria and Addis Ababa-Bole International Airport, (ADD) in Ethiopia.
