- Despite diverse resources that Tanzania has, since independence the country just showed no interest of harnessing them. And now, it pays the price of too much reliance on hydro-power
Prof Sospeter Muhongo
Dar es Salaam. Energy and Minerals minister Prof Sospeter Muhongo yesterday faulted strategies and policies formulated by colonialists on power generation, saying they are out-of-date and are costing the nation dearly.
The minister said since independence the country has been relying on hydro-power despite having abundant resources that can enable it to generate energy from various sources.
Prof Muhongo said this when addressing the German Academic Exchange Service Alumni conference. He said the energy sector in the country was disappointing and discouraging, saying however, that now it’s showing a promising future.
The alumni met to discuss issues related to renewable power generation and affordable energy to all Tanzanians and is expected to come up with resolutions on what should be done that will later be handed to the ministry.
“The energy system put in place by the colonial rulers is overwhelmed by a vast increase in the population,” said Prof Muhongo.
He added that the government was currently working to encourage investment in the electricity sub-sector in order to expand its generating capacity and distribution systems while, at the same time, working to develop local energy sources, including wind, solar and coal.
“We have seen that we cannot continue depending on the hydro-electric power generation and this has been the main source of the electricity problems we are facing,” he said.
