Zitto: Here’s why I chose to join ACT

To Mr Kabwe’s supporters this is just the climax of the dirty politics played by a section of top Chadema leaders who are scared of the young politician’s influence and a great promise in the national politics.

Dar es Salaam. Former Kigoma North MP and Chadema Deputy Secretary General Zitto Kabwe, yesterday explained why he joined the newly established Alliance for Change and Transparency (ACT-Tanzania).

He told reporters that ACT promises to champion the principles of democracy and fight for ideologies that puts national interest first and serves all wananchi equally.

Mr Kabwe is the first high profile politician in ACT—the country’s 22nd political party—which he joins after quitting his parliamentary seat last week following his expulsion from Chadema, the leading opposition party where he honed his skills as a young lawmaker.

Mr Kabwe said ACT-Tanzania will fight corruption and champion good governnace, issues he noted pre-occupied his 10 years as MP.

He added that the new party believes in socialism and subscribes to the principles of Mwalimu Nyerere especially on leadership ethics and integrity.

“I’ve been a patriot and this is one of the main pillars of ACT. I hence believe that through it, I’ll be able to continue advocating the interests of the nation,” he said during his first press conference as a member of the party. He registered on Saturday.

Mr Kabwe was flanked at the press conference in Serena Hotel by Prof Kitila Mkumbo and Mr Samson Mwigamba, all of whom were stripped of their positions in Chadema alongside Mr Kabwe. Mr Mwigamba is ACT-Tanzania Secrertary General. They were kicked out of Chadema, over accusations that they were engineering an internal coup.

“As a politician, I believe in socialism ideology, and in this party, every leader is supposed to follow leadership ethics, and they are supposed to commit themselves by signing, therefore leaders should set good example,” he said, in a tone to suggest he will be playing a central role in the new party.

Other principles of ACT-Tanzania include independence, hardwork, professionalism and attentiveness in attending various social and political related issues. “I agree with ACT that country’s economic resources must be used to fight poverty beleaguering Tanzanians,” said Mr Kabwe,
