Arusha. Sh500 million worth of medical equipment for screening malaria have mysteriously disappeared at Levolosi Health Centre in the city.
Chairman of the City Council Committee on Health and Education Isaya Doita, enumerated the equipment as laboratory equipment, a desktop computer, a table, chairs, beds and a Toyota Double Cabin vehicle.
The equipment disappeared immediately after a five-year research project implemented by Family Health International (FHI) was accomplished in 2012, Doita said yesterday.
“All those implicated in the loss of the equipment should be arrested and prosecuted,” charged Doita, adding that the city authorities were marred by corrupt practices.
Levolosi Ward councillor Ephata Nanyara, said in an interview with The Citizen that he and two colleagues had spotted the vehicle laden with the equipment.
They reported the matter to the then city director Estomih Sanga who appeared to be aware of the issue.
He said there had been no reports on the whereabouts of the equipment, whereas the contract entered between the city authorities and the FHI required the equipment to remain at the health centre.
“Preliminary reports indicate that the equipment was sent to KCMC (Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre), but neither KCMC nor FHI admits receiving them,” Nanyaro said.
He said FHI had written the authorities immediately after the project was completed, asking to hand over the equipment and buildings to them, but the authorities never responded to the letter.
City Public Relations officer Ntegenjwa Hosea said the authorities had embarked on an investigation which had identified the whereabouts of the equipment in question.
“A former official, who was overseeing the equipment, said they were sent to KCMC where a team has been deployed to ascertain the truth,” she said.
Hosea said the law would take its course in case evidence implicated some people to have stolen them.
