Former Prime Minister, Edward Lowassa
- The call was made by former prime minister, Edward Lowassa, when he delivered his Easter message to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELECT) faithful who attended a congregation at Mwanakwerekwe Church in the Eastern and Coastal Diocese, Urban-West Region.
Zanzibar. Zanzibaris have been urged to protect the Government of National Unity’s (GNU) fundamentals and the country’s peace for their betterment.
They were also advised to honour the First President of the Isles, the late Abeid Amani Karume.
The call was made by former prime minister, Edward Lowassa, when he delivered his Easter message to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (ELECT) faithful who attended a congregation at Mwanakwerekwe Church in the Eastern and Coastal Diocese, Urban-West Region.
Mr Lowassa, who was accompanied by his family including his wife, Regina, said the Isles’ peace has been maintained because of the good steps that are gradually being embraced by the GNU.
“As we commemorate the death of the founding father of the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, it is necessary to keep peace, fight tribalism and strengthen national unity,” said Mr Lowassa.
He underscored the significance of peace in the country’s development, saying no country can achieve development in the absence of tranquility.
Mr Lowassa, who is also a Monduli MP, cautioned that East African countries were increasingly encountering terrorism threats. He thus advised its leaders to take precautionary measures to protect their countries against attacks.
He condemned the recent terrorist attack at Garisa University in neighbouring Kenya which claimed lives of more than 147 people.
“I advise Zanzibaris to take advantage of the prevailing peace to work hard to achieve sustainable development,” noted Mr Lowassa.
Easter Sunday celebrations in all houses of worship were held under tight security led by police officers who surrounded all the main entrances and outlets in churches.
