As long as the topic could be debated, they were debating it mostly stating inaccurate facts but stating them strongly, nonetheless.
It was all fun and games until I overheard one of the guys said that his phone had been off for a day and he was wondering how his WhatsApp groups were doing.
There has been a problem with Tanesco and its distributing mechanisms especially with distribution via mobile phones in the last few days. However, the fact that he said that he was administrator for five groups was more than enough for me to issue an arrest warrant for him should I have been in a position of such power.
Never mind that Tanesco continues to be under the curse of horrible, rash leadership, this guy said he is admin for five WhatsApp groups? Wow. First of all, I have nothing against the application itself.
WhatsApp is great for exchanging information (audio files, images, etc) quickly to anybody in the world with the same application.
It’s made for deals across the world to be made virtually in minutes and as a person on the go, it’s a wonderful tool. Great, now with that said, the number of people in Tanzania who have become slaves to this tool is appalling.
It has become that people can’t and won’t work until they have given their two cents in a group discussion which is usually about nothing important. Irrelevant things that can wait and sometimes, don’t even really need to be discussed on a Monday morning.
This has happened to many people- walk into an office, find someone on their phone chatting but you think it’s something important only to discover it’s a WhatsApp group on nothing relevant.
I had the great misfortune of being driven by someone who was chatting on WhatsApp while driving and they were so caught up on the chat they weren’t looking at the road.
I offered to take the wheel and spare both our lives while they continue to chat happily. WhatsApp groups are in fact, people playing draft all day every day- stating irrelevant, inaccurate facts about any and everything but doing so with the energy that could save the shilling should it be directed there.
One of the guys playing draft was complaining how the government isn’t doing enough to sort out the Tanesco problem and his pal answered, maybe the Minister is in a WhatsApp group with his pals. Oh, the irony!
