Journalists urged to observe ethics

PRESIDENT Ali Mohamed Shein has promised a transparent voting process, urging journalists to build cordial relationships with political parties, electoral officers and the police during election period.

Addressing Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) members and supporters in North Pemba, Dr Shein said every Zanzibari who registered as a voter in the upcoming election should vote and ignored claims that CCM will rig the election.

“I am confident the elections will be free and fair. CCM will win because the people have trust in us,” Dr Shein said. Journalists have been advised to ensure fair and balanced reporting of the elections and adhere strictly to the media codes of election coverage.

Journalists must practise responsible journalism during this crucial time, as the country needs to remain united, facilitators said at the two-day workshop under the theme ‘Media and Elections Training’ held at Sea Cliff Hotel here.

The training was organised by the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC) with support from UNDP as part of its effort to sensitise journalists on the election process.

‘Facilitators from UNDP, ZEC and veteran journalists made presentations touching on security, ethics, coordination and coordination in relation to cover election process fairly.
