Lowassa defends Union - under three-tier system

UNION presidential candidate on Chadema ticket, Mr Edward Lowassa, has reiterated his pledge to get Tanzanians out of poverty should he win the election in October.

“We have the resources needed to enable us effect change at high speed.

I hate poverty and will make sure that people get out of poverty within the shortest possible time,’’ Mr Lowassa told a rally at the Kibanda Maiti grounds here.

He told a cheering crowd that he would during the campaign period explain how he plans to get people out of poverty.

He also promised to look into the legal process to make sure justice is done to leaders of an Islamic propagation group, UAMSHO, from Zanzibar now in jail for terrorism.

He also said he supported the three-tier form of Union government, which he observed seeks to provide more autonomy to Zanzibar.

“But this should be a step forward in the overall effort to strengthen the union because it is good for the people. We need to defend it and make sure each party in the Union benefits,” he added. It was around 10.30 am when Mr Lowassa, accompanied by his running-mate, Mr Juma Duni Haji, Mr Freeman Mbowe (Chadema), Mr James Mbatia (NCCR) and Mr Emmanuel Makaid (NLD) landed at the Zanzibar Airport where they were received by the Secretary General of CUF, Mr Seif Sharif Hamad.

Led by a police escort due to Mr Hamad’s status as Zanzibar First Vice-President, Mr Lowassa’s motorcade then headed to the rally grounds, about four kilometres from Zanzibar Airport.

Police had banned any demonstration to welcome or accompany Mr Lowassa. Law enforcers and other security officers were deployed along the Airport-Mwanakwerekwe-Amani route to make sure there was no procession.

The turn-out at Kibandamaiti was big and both Mr Lowassa and Mr Hamad, who is CUF Zanzibar presidential candidate, said the reception accorded to the former prime minister in all regions was a confirmation that victory for the opposition is inevitable.

Mr Mbowe, Mr Mbatia and the running-mate each asked the people to vote for the opposition if they craved for meaningful change, warning that any person who will try to violate human rights risks being taken to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in Geneva.

Meanwhile, Mr Said Soud Said and Mr Juma Ali Khatib, who are aspiring for the Zanzibar presidency on AFP and TADEA tickets respectively, were on Monday the first to collect nomination forms at the offices of the Zanzibar Electoral Commission (ZEC).

Mr Said promised to focus on women empowerment while Mr Khatib mentioned that his priority as a president of Zanzibar would be to support the youth in various development programmes.
