17 sustainable development goals launched in Tanzania!

UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Representative, Alvaro Rodriguez
The United Nations in conjunction with the government yesterday officially launched 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Tanzania, a global call of action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure all human beings enjoy peace and prosperity.
The new goals replace Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) whose target ranged from halving extreme poverty rates to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education by the end of this year.
At the launch in Dar es Salaam, UN said that for the first time Tanzania and other governments of developing countries as well as the wealthy countries have agreed on a set of goals for everyone.
It also stressed that the goals will help all nations and all people create jobs with new skills and better incomes, better shared prosperity, reduce poverty, and protect the planet from environmental damage and climate change.
UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Representative Alvaro Rodriguez said that SDGs will address the interconnected elements of sustainable development, economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection.
“For the first time governments of rich and poor countries commit to bring to zero the number of poor people, to end child hunger, and to bring to an end the death of children from preventable disease,” he said.
Rodriguez added: “It is a level of ambition never seen before in world history.  And the goals apply not just to developing countries, but to all countries around the world, because even rich countries suffer to some extent from poverty and other forms of deprivation.
This is why the term ‘leaving no one behind’ is so important as the UN Secretary General has often stated, this is the first generation in world history that can end absolute poverty in the world, a noble objective indeed”.
The UN Boss in Tanzania went further saying that the goals also commit governments everywhere to creating open and accountable institutions free of corruption where the rule of law stands paramount.
He underscored that the goals came out of the most inclusive participatory process in world history, involving face-to-face consultations in over 100 countries and the input of millions of citizens through website contributions.
“The people of Tanzania played a major role through government-led and United Nations supported consultations across the country,” he said.
The 17 Global Goals contain 169 targets which are to be implemented between 1 January 2016 and 31 December 2030. Importantly, Goal 17 on Implementation calls for a new Global Partnership for Development, an intensive global engagement…brings together governments, the private sector, civil society, the United Nations system and other actors and mobilizing all available resources, he observed.
For his part, Zanzibar Planning Commissioner Ahmed Makame said: “as I look at the 17 SDGs, I can not help but feel proud that Zanzibar has been part of this global initiative”
Added: “I can not also help but feel very optimistic that Tanzania is starting the road to meet the SDGs on the right foot. As we have learned from our experiences to meet the MDGs, we saw how important it was to align the national development strategy to global goals.
Emphasising on the partnership towards achieving the goals, Ambassador of Ireland to Tanzania Fionnuala Gilsenan, assured her country’s support for the SDGs implementation: “The global goals build on the MDGs but they are more ambitious and they deal with new dimensions of the old problems. They aim to tackle the complex nature of poverty and inequality.”
Speaking on behalf of everyone partners, Liz Lloyd, the CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Tanzania asserted the importance of the private sector partnering with the UN and the government in spreading the message of the global goals.
The SDGs were launched globally on 25 September when world leaders came together in New York. The  new targets will come into effect on 1st January 2016.
