Hamad visits well believed to contain oil on Pemba island

Zanzibar's Civic United Front (CUF) presidential candidate, Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad
Zanzibar’s Civic United Front (CUF) presidential candidate, Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad, yesterday visited a well believed to contain oil at Tundauwa in Pemba Island, saying its drilling would start soon.
He said for a long time drilling failed to start because of  poor implementation of directives. He therefore promised to do so should he be voted into office as the Zanzibar president.
He said he would also make sure that there were strong and workable strategies for the country’s development and that of its people.
News from the area has it that, dug 53 years ago, the oil well has more than 12,700 cubic feet that have shown signs of containing oil.
Maalim Seif also visited the  women’s development association in Tundauwa and called on female villagers to join it so as to benefit from its activities.
He said the association deals with various issues, including environmental conservation and agriculture. According to him, it has been a good example to women for its achievements since its establishment.
Said he: “This association is doing a great job which everyone should try to emulate. I would like to call on women villagers to join it in great numbers in order to bring about development.”
Earlier, an association member, Raya Abdallah Rashid, said the aim of establishing it was to join women’s efforts in combating poverty and conserving the environment.
She mentioned some of its obligations as creating awareness on drug abuse and effects of climate change in the community.
According to her, the association was formed in 2007 and has made many achievements. These  include full recognition by authorities as an association, beekeeping and vegetable farming, she said.
Raya said they still faced challenges, however, including lack of an office. But  they were now building a new one which has so far cost them more than 7.5m/-, she said.
She called on well-wishers to help them financially so that they may complete construction of the building.
