He told a campaign rally at the Lawi Nangwanda Sijaona Stadium in Mtwara Municipality that owing to the discovery of natural gas in the area, the regions have a huge potential of becoming the key drivers of the country’s economy.
Dr Magufuli told a wellattended campaign rally that if elected to the post, he would oversee transformation of Mtwara Port into a world class infrastructure to serve neighbouring countries like Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.”
I would like Mtwara to be at the level of Dar es Salaam and Tanga ports,” he said.
He added that envisaged work on the Mtwara-Tandahimba and Newala to Masasi road stretches to bituminous level and construction of the railway line linking Mtwara, Songea and Mbamba Bay would take off as soon as he ascends to the top leadership post. The packed Mashujaa Ground here was in jubilant mood as the presidential aspirant vowed to deal mercilessly with corrupt and lazy officials. “Having been in government for 20 years I know that there are some few corrupt officials who taint our image; but I will have no mercy with them,” he warned.
Meanwhile, Dr Magufuli has pledged to fully utilise his knowledge in cashewnuts to improve production of the cash crop and improve the welfare of farmers.
“I did a research on cashewnut and its chemical properties for my third degree (PhD). Therefore, I consider myself competent enough to talk about the crop,” noted Dr Magufuli during a campaign rally at Tandahimba.
The research topic he did in 2009 is titled ‘’The Potential of Anacardic Acid Self – Assembled Monolayer from Cashewnut Shell Liquid as Corrosion Protection Coatings.”
Dr Magufuli said if elected president, he would ensure farmers’ lives are transformed, warning that he would not tolerate unscrupulous business people who have been shortchanging poor farmers.
“My idea is to have properly functioning processing plants in Mtwara and other regions that grow the crop to transform their economies and provide employment to many people,” he pledged.
The presidential candidate noted that promotion of the crop would go hand in hand with improvement of infrastructure in the southern regions, revealing that apart from other projects, the 200 kilometres from Mtwara to Masasi would soon be tarmacked.
He reiterated that the CCM government would ensure discovery of natural gas in Lindi and Mtwara regions transform people’s lives and modernise the area, which had for long lagged behind in development.
Dr Magufuli asked the electorate to retain Mr George Mkuchika as their MP by massively voting for him. Addressing a rally in Newala earlier, Dr Magufuli urged the crowd to vote for the ruling party for the sake of the country’s stability and prosperity, insisting that CCM is determined and capable of delivering its promises.
In another development, Dr Magufuli appealed to the public to protect people living with albinism and expose individuals connected with their killing for them to face the law.
He said this after spotting a Standard Six pupil (Rizik Rashid) living with albinism among the crowd at Nanyamba. Dr Magufuli handed the boy 100,000/- to buy new uniforms and urged his father, Mr Faraja Rashid, to ensure his son attends school.
“I promise that I will monitor his progress,” said the presidential aspirant. Meanwhile, ROSE ATHUMANI reports from Dodoma that CCM’s parliamentary candidate for Mtera constituency, Mr Livingstone Lusinde, has requested the government for a local authority council.
Mr Lusinde also requested the construction of a wine-making plant in Mtera that will provide a market for grapes grown aplenty in his constituency.
Mr Lusinde, who is famously known as ‘Kibajaji’, made the request yesterday during the CCM presidential running mate, Ms Samia Suluhu Hassan’s campaign rally at Mloa Barabarani village in Mtera constituency, Chamwino District.
Mr Lusinde said his constituency will give all votes to CCM on October 25, urging Ms Samia to push for his request for Mtera to have a local authority of its own.
He said although the government has successfully implemented the 2010 election manifesto in almost all sectors, including electricity, his constituency still faces a number of challenges, including drought, water and mobile communication coverage.
In response, the CCM presidential running mate said the Fifth Phase Union government focus will be on industries, adding that one of the wine plant planned for Dodoma Region will be located in Mtera.
She stated that the problem of water and drought is a result of unnecessary and massive tree cutting, stressing that she will conduct a tree planting campaign in Dodoma Region once CCM is in power.
