PEOPLE with itchy hands over other people’s phones now need to think twice with the launching of a mobile application that provides backup and anti-theft services.
Tigo Tanzania through collaboration with the Dar Teknohama Business Incubator yesterday in Dar es Salaam unveiled the complete smart phone revolutionary protection solution.
Speaking at the event on behalf of the Vice President, the Minister of State for Environment, Dr Binilith Mahenge said that the government was committed to continue creating a conducive environment that supports growth of the ICT industry.
‘Our goal is to develop critical mass of ICT human resources, including innovative programmers at all levels to bridge the digital divide gap - rural versus urban and penetration versus relevant application,” said Dr Mahenge.He said thanks to the country being connected to the national fibre optic backbone, the number of mobile phones shot up from 2.9 million in 2005 to 33 million to date.
The Minister cited that statistics from the past five years indicate that the communications sector is growing at 21 per cent and has a big contribution to the national economy.
“The average mobile phone usage was 69 per cent in 2014 as compared to 3 per cent ten years ago, this is testimony of how big the increase in usage has been,” he said.
The Tigo General Manager, Mr Diego Gutierrez said that the partnership with DTBi to nurture talent among inventors and innovators started a year ago and was thrilled with the results.
Mr Gutierrez said that as a company they are committed to promoting digital lifestyle transformation and that the new App enables Tigo customers to recover their contacts, photos, videos, SMS and documents on the event of a lost, stolen or damaged phone.
“The Tigo Backup service as a unique product enables the owner of a stolen phone to get the phone of the thief, ring an alarm, locate the location of the device, remotely lock the lost phone to prevent misuse, alert the action of changing SIM card and remotely wipe the data,” he explained.
He said that the Tigo Backup App is developed by a local innovator, Mr Godfrey Magila at the DTBi. Mr Gutierrez said that compared to similar solutions in the market, the key differentiation in this feature are that it does not necessarily need Internet connection to work.
The MD cited that the service can be remotely control the lost or stolen phone, its data, location and details of the person using it and come Monday next week, will be available in both English and Kiswahili for use.
The DTBi Chief Executive Officer, Eng George Mulamula said that the new App was a result of implementation of collaboration between Tigo Tanzania and DTBi that aims at fostering digital inclusion in the country as a catalyst of socio-economic growth.
Eng Mulamula said that DTBi has supported Magilatech Company Limited, a startup company run by local youth behind this innovation and a role model to be emulated.
